Working Through The Processes Of Life

Stretching ourselves to do things we have never done can be difficult at times.

I have been stretching myself the past few months at art lessons. I had this bright idea to draw and paint my self-portrait. Go ahead, you can laugh now! Fun fact: people are the hardest to draw and paint. But I knew going in that it wasn’t going to be easy. Then again, I have this one hitch that I could let hold me back—it’s called dystonia. Drawing two eyes the same size is hard for anybody, but add dystonia into the mix and it can get challenging pretty fast.

There are two things you want to accomplish when you are painting people. First, it has to look human. Second, it has to resemble the person you’re painting. I think I’ve accomplished the first one but I’m having trouble with making it resemble me. At least it looks human.

We have all gone through awkward stages in life when we are young. Well, paintings go through awkward stages, also. It bugs me when my paintings go through awkward stages. But there’s a process with every painting I paint. I’m always glad when I’m finished with the painting, because you would have never known there was an awkward stage.

Life is full of processes. For example, exercising to run a marathon, eating healthy, getting out of your comfort zone, living with an chronic illness, writing a book or painting a painting. It’s how you go through the process that makes the product better. That list requires some stretching, and life will stretch you in uncomfortable and awkward ways. You must have faith when it’s uncomfortable and awkward and look forward to reaching your goal. For instance, I’ve been really tight this month, but next Tuesday I get my Botox (which helps me a ton). I have been counting down the days until I get my Botox and keeping myself encouraged.

What’s stretching you right now?

I haven’t finished my portrait yet but here’s what it looks like now. I’ll post a picture on Abiding With Joy in Christ’s Facebook page when I finish it.

Every aspect of my life is a “stretcher” right now! Being uncomfortable is just… well, uncomfortable (ha!), but God is constantly telling me to dig my heels in, to stretch further. Thank you for your words!

I love the texture and shading that you do. It’s kinda like your trademark. You are adorable and your self-portrait makes me want to reach out and hug you. I just love it!!🤗❤️🤗❤️
